2016 Caldwell Syrah
Tasting Notes
Black and blue fruits mingle in the glass with sweet floral notes and aromas of earth, spice, and vanilla. Ripe blueberry, boysenberry, and currant show on the palate interspersed with flavors of cracked black pepper, crushed minerals, tanned leather, and savory herbs. These elements are balanced by fresh acidity, ultrafine tannins, and a hint of salinity providing an overall sense of depth and structure which culminates in a long, complex finish. Winemaker Julien Fayard has used top tier fruit from Caldwell’s volcanic soils to create a wine that is plush and modern in style but one that also evokes a European sense of freshness and vivacity. This bottling is sure to have wide-ranging appeal to wine enthusiasts of both the new and old worlds and to fine wine collectors at every level. tobacco, all adding to a remarkably complex and nuanced finish. The structure and concentration of this wine indicates it will cellar gracefully for many years, but those who have tasted it know the real challenge will be not drinking it all in the short term.
